Strangeness Production at the HERA-B Experiment

HERA-B is a fixed target experiment at the 920 GeV HERA proton beam at DESY which uses a variety of nuclear targets. During the last data taking period from Nov. 2002 to Feb. 2003, 200 million minimum bias events were recorded. A large sample of V^0(K_zero, Lambda_zero, Lambda_zero_bar), approximately 20000 cascade hyperons Xi^(-/+) and 1200 Omega^(-/+) over low background were reconstructed using these data. About 1 million K^*(892) --> K pi and 60,000 phi(1020) --> K^+K^- decays in central production $(-0.15 < x_F < 0.1, 0.5 < p_t^2 < 12.1 (GeV/c)^2 were analyzed. Preliminary results for differential p_t^2 spectra, atomic numeber dependence and anti-particle to particle ratios are presented.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures, Proceedings of the Conference:"QCD and High Energy Hadronic Interactions", XXXIXth Rencontres de Moriond, La Thuile, Italy - March 28 - April 4, 200

Search for the exotic Ξ(1860)\Xi^{--}(1860) Resonance in 340GeV/c Σ\Sigma^--Nucleus Interactions

We report on a high statistics search for the Ξ(1860)\Xi^{--}(1860) resonance in Σ\Sigma^--nucleus collisions at 340GeV/c. No evidence for this resonance is found in our data sample which contains 676000 Ξ\Xi^- candidates above background. For the decay channel Ξ(1860)Ξπ\Xi^{--}(1860) \to \Xi^-\pi^- and the kinematic range 0.15<xF<<x_F<0.9 we find a 3σ\sigma upper limit for the production cross section of 3.1 and 3.5 μ\mub per nucleon for reactions with carbon and copper, respectively.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, modification of ref. 43 and 4

    Measurement of the Omega_c Lifetime

We present the measurement of the lifetime of the Omega_c we have performed using three independent data samples from two different decay modes. Using a Sigma- beam of 340 GeV/c we have obtained clean signals for the Omega_c decaying into Xi- K- pi+ pi+ and Omega- pi+ pi- pi+, avoiding topological cuts normally used in charm analysis. The short but measurable lifetime of the Omega_c is demonstrated by a clear enhancement of the signals at short but finite decay lengths. Using a continuous maximum likelihood method we determined the lifetime to be tau(Omega_c) = 55 +13-11(stat) +18-23(syst) fs. This makes the Omega_c the shortest living weakly decaying particle observed so far. The short value of the lifetime confirms the predicted pattern of the charmed baryon lifetimes and demonstrates that the strong interaction plays a vital role in the lifetimes of charmed hadrons.Comment: 15 pages, including 7 figures; gzipped, uuencoded postscrip

Open and Hidden Charm Production in 920 GeV Proton-Nucleus Collisions

The HERA-B collaboration has studied the production of charmonium and open charm states in collisions of 920 GeV protons with wire targets of different materials. The acceptance of the HERA-B spectrometer covers negative values of xF up to xF=-0.3 and a broad range in transverse momentum from 0.0 to 4.8 GeV/c. The studies presented in this paper include J/psi differential distributions and the suppression of J/psi production in nuclear media. Furthermore, production cross sections and cross section ratios for open charm mesons are discussed.Comment: 5 pages, 9 figures, to be published in the proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Hyperons, Charm & Beauty Hadrons (BEACH04), Chicago, IL, June 27 - July 3, 200

Measurement of the J/Psi Production Cross Section in 920 GeV/c Fixed-Target Proton-Nucleus Interactions

    Get PDF
The mid-rapidity (dsigma_(pN)/dy at y=0) and total sigma_(pN) production cross sections of J/Psi mesons are measured in proton-nucleus interactions. Data collected by the HERA-B experiment in interactions of 920 GeV/c protons with carbon, titanium and tungsten targets are used for this analysis. The J/Psi mesons are reconstructed by their decay into lepton pairs. The total production cross section obtained is sigma_(pN)(J/Psi) = 663 +- 74 +- 46 nb/nucleon. In addition, our result is compared with previous measurements
